WHO IS MEQQUSAALIK?
We have always known that our natural environment is unpredictable. We have also always known that our clothing needs to do more than simply protect against the elements. That is why our outdoor wear has the name and power of the ancient spirit guide: Meqqusaalik.
The story goes that angakkuit shamans would summon up a benevolent and wise spirit guide before venturing on spiritual quests into the hazards of Greenland’s inland ice. For the edge of the ice sheet was bitter cold, and inhabited by malevolent beings. The smiling spirit guide was benevolent, caring for humankind. His body was covered in magical down, and his arms were like huge protective wings. As protection against the cold of the ice sheet and the threat from evil spirits, he gave angakkuit shamans a piece of his warming plumage. The name of the spirit guide was Meqqusaalik.
That spirit lives on in every single Meqqusaalik garment, as a modern amulet providing protection against things unseen.
